Heathen Days of Old

Upon a sunny summer’s day
I saw some rune stones in a field
They’re all that’s left now from old forgotten days
When other people walked upon this land

Back in the Heathen days of old
When the Vikings ruled these lands
There were no pavements and no streets
The land was wild, the people free
A land of wolves, land of wild boars

Back in the Heathen days of old
Fields and forests lay wide across the lands
Instead of cars you had your horse
It was the time when silence lived
The time when nature was your god
And you were growing your own food
And air and water was still clean
And there was no pollution then

Back in the Heathen days of old
No office job from nine to five
No hurry through the city streets
No credit cards or designer clothes
What really matters was your own family
And to spend your time with them

Back in the Heathen days of old
Women still had body hair
Were curvy and all natural
No make-up on to hide their face
They were beautiful and strong

Back in the Heathen days of old
The men had long and flowing hair
Their skin was beaten by the winds
And all had stubble on their chins
And muscles not made in a gym

Back in the Heathen days of old
Love poems were carved into stone
Before the Christians came with sexism
With gender roles and female sin
And long before we all spoke English
Before the world was just one big America

Back in the Heathen days of old
The Holy Land was the forest grove
The face of God was the face of the wolf
And the Wise Men were two ravens black

In our modern gloomy days
The air is dirty, full nof noise
I hear the cars not far away
I smell the smog in the hot air
Most of the animals are gone
Along with forests, brooks and fields
There isn’t much life
Not much beauty anymore
There are just the sad remains
Of those free Heathen days of old

I say,
Come Freya. come Thor, come Baldur, come Idun, come Verdandi and Hel
Come take back the lands that were yours
Let the mighty Ygdrasil rise up
Yet all I hear among the stones
Is the silent whispers of the wind

For only three forces are eternal
The first is the power of love
The second the passing of time
And the third is the changing of the world
